A Day at Grier Summer
Campers
are assigned to a unit of 8 to 10 girls the same age. At least two staff
members are assigned to each unit. Each unit sits together for meals, and breakfast is served at
7:45am. Following breakfast all units meet in the auditorium for roll call and announcements before the first activity. Here are the times for the four activity periods for all days except field trip day (Monday) and Crazy Days (Thursdays).
Activity #1 8:30am-10am
Activity #2 10:15am-11:45am
Activity #3 2:00pm-3:30pm
Snacktime: 3:30pm-3:45pm
Activity #4 3:45pm-5:15pm

between activities for transition time for traveling from place to
place and changing clothes if necessary.

Walking between activities is a nice time to develop friendships.
These roommates at camp both enjoy a morning riding lesson.
Lunch is served at
noon, and at 12:30 half of the campers have a free swim period, while
the other half has rest hour. During rest hour, campers stay in their
dormitory rooms, or visit the room of another camper in the same unit.
Campers are expected to be quiet, but are not required to sleep.
Activities encouraged during rest hour are reading, letter writing,
drawing, and playing card games. There is always a staff person on duty
in the hall during rest hour and life guards at the pool.

Afternoon snack is at 3:30pm on the Colonnade or at the barn. After the last activity, there's an hour before dinner for changing clothes, taking a shower, maybe doing laundry or spending time with the girls in your unit. This hour is a unit activity time and allows the
staff to become more aware of campers’ individual needs, and campers to
develop deeper relationships with members of a small camp “family.
Decorating your own cookie is a popular afternoon snack!
Dinner is at 6:30pm. At
7:00, counselors lead another unit activity. Sometimes, this activity
period involves preparation for the evening program. Each night there is one large-group activity or the
entire camp, or several activities through which large groups of
campers rotate. Examples of evening programs are campfires, scavenger
hunts, capture the flag, crazy Olympics, dance presentations, talent
shows, game shows, lip sync contests, skit nights, and movie nights. Evening programs usually end at 9:00pm.

Creating a fractured fairy tale was an evening activity.
The oldest units, usually the 16 and 17 year olds, have the option to plan their own evening program two nights a week off campus. Activities might include going to a movies or a minor league baseball, maybe going out for dinner or to a local state park for canoeing. Their counselors go with them. The incidential fee covers the added expense of these special outings.
By
9:30 p.m., campers are back in the dormitories and getting ready for
bed. Exact times for lights out depend on the campers' age and the
activities of the day. However, all campers must be in their rooms at 11:00pm.
The location of Grier School is safe and secure.
